The Quiet Luxury of Slowing Down
Merry Christmas, Happy Hannukah, and Happy Kwanzaa to those who celebrate.

During the holiday season, our days grow shorter, and our schedules relax. Before you launch into festive plans and resolutions, there is time to notice how you are living now—and how you want to live next year.
Life in today’s world happens to be very comfortable. We have heated rooms, air-conditioned cars, instant food, and purchases that can be made and delivered with just a click. The conveniences of life are miraculous, and they will always be a gift.
But this convenience has a silent cost.
When everything is optimized for ease, we start to live in a way that is removed from our bodies. We notice less. We touch less. And over time, our sense of pleasure diminishes—not because the world is less beautiful, but because we are less present in it.
Joan Didion knew this. She famously used good silverware daily, not because it was necessary, but because it kept her mind present. She reminded herself that it was worthwhile to celebrate everyday. Didion believed everyday is not a time to live existentially, but in a way where we are immersed in a particular moment.

She also knew that real luxury should never really be about large, spectacular situations or high-end brands. Real luxury is in the small things: the cup you drink out of, the fork you eat with, the chair you sit in.
At some point in our lives, most of us were taught to reserve beauty for a special event or two. But the reality is that we have daily access to special items every day. They are the things you reach out and touch each day that are important to you. If you take them for granted, it can dull your sensibilities.

With a new year comes new resolutions, but you can start making changes in a smaller way right now.
What you already have is important.
Select one common thing in your life and make it more beautiful in your eyes.
Be more mindful of it and how it interacts with your surroundings.
The world is very generous with inputs if we can sense them.
Perhaps, next year could be a slower pace. A bit more detailed.
A little more alive. Less sterile. More colorful and vibrant.
Less abstract. More intimate.
We wish that for you and a very merry holiday with your loved ones!
Why the holiday feels like a void (and how to fix it).
