Have you ever had your kid slam their door because you said no to something? Then you spend the next hour replaying the conversation, wondering whether you should’ve phrased something differently, and feel lowkey guilty the rest of the night?
This happens a lot.
But we often forget that we’re not responsible for how someone else feels. Responsibility requires control, and you don’t control another person’s emotions. You can say the kindest thing possible and your kid might still slam the door—their reaction depends on their day, or mood, or what happened at school...none of which you can see or manage.
This isn’t an excuse to stop caring. You can want your child (or anyone) to feel good and also still accept that their feelings aren’t yours to manage.
Wanting a good outcome and being responsible for the outcome are two different things. Mixing them up is where we get in trouble. It can lead to walking on eggshells, over-explaining a decision, or softening a boundary because you’re afraid of the reaction.
When this happens, remember what you actually control is small, but it’s real.
You control your thoughts, actions, and what you focus on.
You can love your kid with your whole heart and still not carry their emotions.
So next time your kid slams the door, let it be. That slam is their own, not proof you did something wrong.

And what to do instead of apologizing
