💪 TL;DR: How Athletes Build Resilience
If there’s one group of people that are experts in losing—or even just having bad days—it’s athletes. Here, Sol TV expert and professional coach Seth Pepper shares some of the top strategies they use to rebound from setbacks.
They use “for” not “to.” Rather than wallowing in disbelief or anger over a loss or injury, great athletes direct their energy toward what they can control, and they recover by advancing their skills.
They tell themselves a setback happens “for” their benefit, not “to” their detriment.
A rule they play by: Don’t entertain a negative storyline long enough to make it part of your belief system.
👥 They build a support system. It can be difficult to let yourself be vulnerable and open up to people, but having relationships with people who have experienced similar struggles can be beneficial. That sense of understanding is a powerful source of comfort. Reaching out and finding the right people to talk to can be a crucial part of the healing process.
🏷️ They label emotions. Studies have shown that simply naming an emotion can reduce its intensity.
But…Labels can be restrictive since they can oversimplify and erase the complexity of the individual experience. It’s important to recognize that labels are just one way of expressing identity.
🎯 They know that purpose trumps pain. Having a purpose that transcends themselves enables athletes to push through complex challenges, including injury or loss. When the purpose is more significant than pain, purpose wins out.
